Memorial Site

On March 27, 1994 a powerful tornado struck the Goshen community,
destroying our church sanctuary and claiming the lives of 20 of the
146 members attending Palm Sunday worship.

The Memorial Garden was commissioned by relatives and
friends of those who perished.

It is intended to be a fitting memorial on the site of the devastated sanctuary to celebrate the lives of those who were lost and as a tribute to the survivors, the rescuers and those who have assisted in rebuilding the community.

The garden includes a bosk of twenty dogwood trees. Each tree
is marked with a plaque bearing the name of one of the victims.

A multi-purpose open-air chapel was built, and is used
for worship, receptions and celebrations of life.

A large concrete monolith on the east end of the memorial plaza symbolizes
the brokenness and despair of this tragic event.

On the west end, a limestone monument represents the healing and
life-giving power of God. From a fissure in the center of this wall,
the healing waters of God quietly descend through the plaza and
into the world.

The footings of the devastated sanctuary remain and
are outlined with low walls, reminding us that God and His church
are the foundation of our faith.
