Palm Sunday Tornado
On March 27, 1994 an F4 tornado hit the church during the Palm Sunday service,
taking the lives of 20 people, and injuring many others. We were uplifted during
this time by the prayers, cards, visits, and donations
from Christ’s body all over the world.
The front section of the church, where the nursery
was located, remained.
The sanctuary was destroyed. Over 140 worshipers were present that day to see
an Easter drama, Watch the Lamb, and to celebrate Palm Sunday.
After the tornado, we received many gifts from all over the world. They lifted us up and helped us to know that we were not alone. Among those gifts were a banner and a painting of Jesus walking on turbulent waters.
These and other gifts are reminders that God is with us through all our storms, and with His help, we will rise above them and be stronger because of of them.
We can now affirm the truth of the message contained on a plaque and in the words of a song:
“Sometimes God calms the storm. Sometimes he lets the storm rage, and calms the child.”
